A capital built from nothing in 41 months

Brasília was created ex nihilo on empty savanna at the geographic center of Brazil, built between 1956 and 1960 under President Juscelino Kubitschek to shift the country's center of gravity inland, away from the coast and Rio de Janeiro. A 1957 national urban-design competition was won by architect Lúcio Costa, submitted as just 15 freehand sketches and 23 handwritten paragraphs under the name "Plano Piloto" — the Pilot Plan. Costa then brought in his former assistant Oscar Niemeyer as chief architect of the government buildings. Viewed from above, the plan resembles an airplane (or a bird, or a dragonfly, depending who you ask): the Monumental Axis carrying government and public buildings forms the fuselage, while residential superblock districts spread out as the wings — a deliberate modernist symbol of speed and Brazil's leap into the future. The city was formally inaugurated on April 21, 1960, and its Pilot Plan core earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1987 — just 27 years after completion, unusually fast recognition for a planned modern city.

The National Congress, a silhouette everyone recognizes

Niemeyer's National Congress complex pairs a central 28-storey twin-tower block — the city's tallest building — with a convex dome housing the Chamber of Deputies and a concave dome for the Senate, one of the most recognizable government-building silhouettes anywhere in the world. It sits at one end of the Monumental Axis, the "fuselage" of Costa's airplane-shaped city, alongside the Palácio do Planalto (the president's workplace) and other landmark Niemeyer buildings that make walking the axis feel like touring the entire urban concept in a single afternoon.

The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge (JK Bridge) crossing Lake Paranoá in Brasília

A cathedral of light and a palace of arches

Consecrated in 1970, the Metropolitan Cathedral is built from 16 curved reinforced-concrete columns opening skyward, with triangular glass panels flooding an interior that can seat up to 40,000 — visitors approach via an underground passage before emerging beneath three suspended angel sculptures and the full sweep of the glass ceiling. Also completed in 1970, the Itamaraty Palace — headquarters of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs — is known for its dramatic concrete arches rising over a reflecting pool with floating gardens, a gravity-defying spiral interior staircase, and grounds landscaped by Roberto Burle Marx, one of the 20th century's most influential landscape architects.

The JK Bridge and Lake Paranoá

Named for the president who built the city, the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge crosses Lake Paranoá — itself an artificial lake created alongside the city to regulate its climate — with a distinctive undulating steel-arch design that has become a symbol of Brasília's engineering ambition to match its architecture. The lake and bridge together frame views of the Plano Piloto that put the whole airplane-shaped layout into visual context, especially from the water at sunset.

A capital with borrowed flavors

Built on empty savanna, Brasília has no long-standing pre-1960 culinary tradition of its own — a genuine point of contrast with older Brazilian cities worth stating honestly rather than inventing false specificity. What it does have is a broad mix drawn from residents who arrived from across the country, plus a strong regional Goiás and Cerrado influence: feijoada (bean and meat stew), churrasco steakhouses and pão de queijo cheese bread sit alongside dishes built around pequi, a pungent yellow Cerrado fruit that shows up in stews and rice dishes and takes most first-time visitors by surprise.

From the airport to the Plano Piloto

Brasília's airport sits about 15 km from the city center, roughly 20 minutes by taxi. The Metrô-DF Orange Line runs a station directly to the airport for 5.50 BRL, and bus lines 102.6/102.7 reach Asa Sul metro station in about 20 minutes for 2.70 BRL, or lines 102/102.1 to the main bus terminal in about 40 minutes for 3.80 BRL. Brasília is generally considered more affordable than Rio or São Paulo for budget travelers: figures range from R$68-165 a day for backpackers up to R$370-750 mid-range, with an average daily meal cost around $55 — breakfast $6-17, lunch $8-22, dinner $17-39.
