Airport and transfers
An airport less than 10 km from the centre, linked by commuter train
Porto Alegre - Salgado Filho
Salgado Filho International Airport, the main airport of Rio Grande do Sul, is about 7 km from the centre according to Wikivoyage (EN). A small automated train, the Aeromóvel, links the terminal to the Trensurb station, the commuter train serving the historic centre and the long-distance bus station; bus stops are also near the airport. Taxis and ride-hailing (Uber, 99) are available; traffic is slow at rush hours, notably on Avenida Zaida Jarros, which links the airport to the BR-290.
Distance taken from Wikivoyage (EN), a single source; times vary with traffic. We give no fares, which change.
Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, has about 1.3 million inhabitants (2022 census, Wikipedia FR) and more than 4 million in its metropolitan area (Wikivoyage EN). Founded in the 18th century with settlers from the Azores and later German, Italian and Polish immigrants, it stretches along the Guaíba, a large lake-like estuary. Its name means joyful port. It is also a gateway to the Serra Gaúcha.
Landmarks and sights
The lakefront, the market and the culture house
The historic centre (Centro Histórico) holds most of the sights: the Mercado Público, the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana, the Praça da Alfândega, churches including the city's oldest basilica, and the metropolitan cathedral. The Usina do Gasômetro, a former power station on the edge of the Guaíba, hosts cinemas and exhibitions; at the end of the day many people gather there to watch the sun set over the lake, according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Sunset over the Guaíba
The sunset over the Guaíba is one of the city's best-loved moments; people watch it from the waterfront, near the Usina do Gasômetro or in the Ipanema district. In winter the wind can be strong, so bring an extra layer.

The Mercado Público
Opened in 1869 and altered several times, the market holds more than a hundred stalls of produce and local crafts, as well as restaurants. It is a good place to try gaúcho cooking and buy local crafts.

The Parque Farroupilha
Nicknamed Redenção, this park hosts the Brique da Redenção on Sundays, a flea and craft market mixing antiques and gaúcho art. We have no photo of the park.
Museums and culture
A city of books, museums and gaúcho culture
The Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana
Housed in the former Hotel Majestic, where the poet Mario Quintana died, the Casa de Cultura hosts exhibitions, cinema and events. Its pink architecture and curved balconies make it easy to recognise.

Museums
The MARGS (Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul), on Praça da Alfândega, shows a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The Fundação Iberê Camargo, in a building by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, is devoted to contemporary art. The Museu Júlio de Castilhos and the PUCRS Museum of Science and Technology complete the offer, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Check opening times and closing days; we give no fares, which change.
Books and gaúcho traditions
The Feira do Livro is held every November on Praça da Alfândega. In September, the Semana Farroupilha and the Acampamento Farroupilha celebrate gaúcho culture and the Ragamuffin War of 1835, and the Porto Alegre em Cena festival brings theatre.
The Serra Gaúcha
Gramado and Canela, a trip of about 115 km
The three photos that follow do not show Porto Alegre: they were taken in Canela and Gramado, in the Serra Gaúcha, about 115 km north-east of the capital (Wikipedia FR, DE, ES). Gramado, at about 830 m, has a cooler, damper climate with occasional frost; its Christmas decorations are famous. A day trip is possible, but a night on site is more comfortable. Both towns lie on the Rota Romântica.
The Catedral de Pedra, in Canela
This neo-Gothic stone church is one of Canela's main landmarks, along with the Caracol park.

The São Pedro church, in Gramado
The stone Igreja Matriz São Pedro stands in the centre of Gramado, surrounded by decorated streets.

The Caracol waterfall, in Canela
The Cascata do Caracol drops into a landscape of araucaria forest, a tree typical of the region.

Food and drink
Gaúcho churrasco, chimarrão and immigrant cooking
Gaúcho churrasco
Gaúcho churrasco, several kinds of grilled meat (beef, chicken, pork, lamb), is the state's speciality; it is often eaten rodízio-style in the churrascarias of the Cidade Baixa district and elsewhere.
Chimarrão
Chimarrão, a bitter maté infusion served in a gourd with a metal straw, is shared and accompanies churrasco and social moments; it is the identity drink of the gaúchos.
Districts and markets
The Mercado Público, the Cidade Baixa district and Bom Fim, near Farroupilha park, group bars, cafés and restaurants. German and Italian immigrants also marked the cooking, with Italian-style dishes on many menus.
Getting around
Trensurb, buses, ride-hailing and taxis
Commuter train and buses
The Trensurb, a single-line commuter train, links the historic centre, the bus station and the airport with several suburban towns. Almost all bus lines run from the centre out to the neighbourhoods; reserved lanes speed up journeys, but buses are crowded at rush hours. Minibuses (lotação) are an alternative.
Ride-hailing, taxis and car
Uber and 99 are widely used and cheaper than taxis, which are also plentiful. A catamaran links the centre to Guaíba, across the lake. Walking between neighbourhoods is impractical because distances are large.
Staying safe
As in most large Brazilian cities, keep an eye on your belongings, especially at night, and check your home country's official travel advice before departure.
Budget
An affordable to medium budget compared with Europe
Porto Alegre remains affordable compared with Europe: buses, pay-by-weight meals and many restaurants cost little, while taxis, upscale hotels and a trip to the very touristy Gramado cost more. We give no figures, because prices change with the season and the exchange rate.
The air fare remains the most variable item. SniperAir tracks prices to POA and compares them with the route's history.
